Problem with display resolution after installing updates.

I just today installed the updates KB933729, KB890830, and KB939653, and
after successfully restarting my computer, the display resolution was
completely off. So I went into the display settings advanced tab to check,
and surely enough it was set to 1400x1050 (4:3 ratio) rather then the
monitors generic resolution which is 1440x900 (16:10 ratio), and fiddling
around with a few things, I noticed that the Intel Accelerated Graphics panel
had gone as well, both from the control panel but also from the display
control, so that I can no longer even see it.

Now, I've already tried rebooting into safemode to set the screen resolution
back, I've tried removing the displays in device manager and I've also done
everything else I can think of to solve this problem - none of it has helped,
though.

So I'd very much appreciate it if any of you could give me a hand with this,
as it seems to me (however weird, since none of the updates mentioned above
affects those parts of Windows) that the updates are to blame.

Thanks in advance,
D. Ebdrup

I'd boot to safe mode and check device manager from there as sometimes
problems will show up that will not show in normal mode. Then I'd try
reinstalling the video card software and see if that puts things right.

Nope, neither of your suggestions helped. I even made sure I had properly
cleaned out the driver for both the graphics card and the display driver -
and it did still not affect the situation. It seems as if Windows refuses to
recognize 16:10 resolutions at all, since all of the resolutions are either
16:9 or some other weird ratio which does not fit this monitor.

Got any other suggestions?

Download the latest version of the hardware driver for the video card from
the video card manufacturer's web site and install it. Also - if the
display in question has a driver (usually no more than an INF file) from the
manufacturer of it's web site - get it and install it. Removing the device
from the device manager and rebooting only installs whatever drivers Windows
XP already has (knows about) - it does *not* update them.

- Vulnerability in RPC Could Allow Denial of Service (933729)
- The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove
specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running
Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 (890830)
- Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (939653)

None of the updates above should likely have any effect on your graphics
card/drivers. However - anything is possible. Have you tried uninstalling
said updates (at least the ones you can?)

Hm, that may be worth trying - but no, those updates seem to be entirely
unrelated. However, I already tried manually overwriting the graphics drivers
and it did nothing to help. To me it seems like more of a problem with the
monitor drivers (which are the generic ones in Windows), than the graphics
drivers since I can still use any other resolution just fine.

Okay, this makes no sense. I enabled my soundcard again (after having
disabled it in favor of using another sound card that I ordered but which I
had to return because it sucked something not quite pleasant), and it oddly
enough began finding drivers for my screen - and now I can use the proper
resolution just fine.

So problem solved, I guess. Although it makes no sense to me.

Soundcards are weird.. I used to have a 30% success rate in
revitalizing old disk drives by yanking the soundcard... guess it was
the fact older soundcards used to have ide controllers embedded in them
that decided to get out of hand somehow.

video, tho, that took that cake!!

maybe that soundcard was the change that made windows do a more thorough
driver checkup..

Hello.

I believe I have the same problem as yours. My optimum display resolution is
1440x900 60Hz. When I tried to install the driver from the instalation CD the
resolution changed to a worst one and now I cannot select this option in the
Windows Vista menu because it doesn't exist!
How can I have the resolution optimum if I can't select it in the menu?
I can't install the driver properly because the application file from
Samsung web site doesn't work as well.
