Problem with calculating formulas in Excel 2003

I am creating a spreadsheet that intends to calculate, on a monthly basis,
the tax due for each company on the group I work for. As this projection has
a 10-year horizon and many variables are included in it, each company has a
similar spreadsheet ranging till cell DT721.

My problem is that I noticed that this workbook I'm working on, whenever it
is open, shows "Calculate" on the nether part of my screen, as if I had
chosen to have my calculations as manual. (Which I haven't done.) Besides,
even if I close my workbook, the "Calculate" message will continue to show on
my Excel till I close the program itself.

Also, my Auditing Tools seem to be getting insane. For instance, I have a
cell (I'll call it B2) whose formula gets info from another cell (dubbed A1,
in this example). If I do a Trace Precedents in B2, it shows A1, but if I do
a Trace Dependents in A1, I get nothing.

Believing that my workbook was crashing (I've had this happen to me in some
older versions of Excel), I decided to create a new workbook, similiar to
this one. I copied the main formulas, redid the structure of the main
spreadsheet, and, as I started making copies of it (one for each company), I
noticed that the calculation problem had returned.

My questions are:
1.It this an Excel issue with the excess of formulas in a single workbook?
Or does it mean my workbook is going wacko?

2.Should I be having problems with the auditing tools, or is this a sign
that Excel needs reinstaling? (Comment: I got this new computer on 2006. I do
not believe it already would be showing wear problems.)

3.Does it affect my work in any way? Or are the formulas being calculated
automatically (even if there's a "Calculate" on the bottom of the Excel
window).

4.How can I avoid this problem without haveing to break my workbook in two
or more workbooks? (Which would be a mess, since the projections are cross
dependant.)

I would like to thank to anyone that took his/her time to read and answer
these questions.
