Problem with blank "yes", "no", "cancel" option boxes

When I try to install any new programs the option boxes, i.e. yes, no, cancel etc., are blank. The boxes themselves are there but there is no text in them. This is also the case with a number of programs. For example, the option boxes in the Nero wizard are blank, as is the instruction text.
