Problem with a shortcut

N

Norman Stein

Hello,

On my desktop I have a shortcut to a folder which I use frequently. My
computer is set up so that when I double click on a folder I get two
columns _ on the left a list of folders and on the right a list of
their content. Normally when I double click on a shortcut to a folder,
the list on the left shows that folder open, the folders in it below,
and its contents on the right. But for the particular folder in
question, the list on the left shows the folder without the usual plus
sign and its contents on the right. In ordre to get it to open on the
left, with the folders it contains below it, i.e., on the left, I have
to double click one of these folders on the right. Why doesn't it
behave like all my other shortcuts to folders and how can I arrange
that it does?

Thanks in advance.

I exactly don't know that why it is happening with a particular folder but
the option you can look for is:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click Tools - Folder Options
3. Click View Tab
4. Look for an option called "Display simple folder view in Explorer's
Folders List". If it is uncheck then make it checked.
5. Meanwhile, you should also take a look on other options like "Remember
each folder's view settings".

If you are not sure about any options then click on "Restore Defaults"
button then click "Apply to all folders".

Hope this information helps you, let us know.

I've tried what you suggest and still have the same problem. Any other
suggestions?

Next suggestion is:

1. Goto the location using the alternate method to which your shortcut refer
to.
2. See if the original location is also behaving the same. If not, then
recreate your folder's shortcut. Maybe the only problem could be the shortcut.
3. If yes, the original location of the folder is behaving in same manners
then allow "Show Hidden files" and check if there is a file name called
"Desktop.ini" in that folder. Delete that file. See if this helps you.
4. If that still doesn't solve the problem then on the same location create
a new folder contain some some more sub-folders and save some documents
inside it. Now, check if that new folder is behaving in good manners or not.
If not, please describe the accurate location (e.g. d:\software\reports) of
your folder in your next post.

Hope any of above helps you, let us know!

I've done what you suggest. The original location behaves properly. I
recreated the shortcut. It still misbehaves. I created a new folder
with subfolders with documents in them and then a shortcut to the new
folder. It works properly. The folder in question is called
C:\CD projects. What do you suggest next? By the way, I thought maybe
the space in its title was causing the problem so I tried to rename
the folder CDprojects but was told I can't rename it.

May be you have solved the problem yourself. It seems that the folder
structure could be corrupt that is why you are unable to rename the folder.
Try once more to rename the folder but be sure that there is no file open
within from the folder. If you are still unable to rename the folder then
create a new folder then copy all your files from CD Project to newer one and
then do everything with the newer one. See if it solves the problem. Later,
if you are unable to delete the CD Project folder then boot your Windows in
Safe Mode and then try to delete.

Hope this one solves the problem, let us know!

I've now created a new folder as you suggested and copied everything
from the old to the new. I then created a shortcut on the desktop to
the new folder and exactly the same thing happens. What next?

Very Strange!!! Out of mind!!!

One last thing which I guess that there is some problem in name structure of
your sub-folders and files. because as you said in your last post that "you
create a new folder, sub-folder and copy some files inside it then create a
shortcut. it works properly". it means when you copy your current (CD
Project) folders files and subfolders to a new folder then only and last
problem could be they are causing the issue.

One more thing, try to copy the data of your CD PROJECT folder some other
drive and see if the problem remain.

I google on this problem but nothing comes up.

Hope these last steps helps you, let us know!

If you are really serious about solving this problem then you can also try:

1. Create a new folder (say "MyData") and then copy only your CD PROJECT
folder files in the new one.
2. Then create a sub-folder of MyData say "Reports"
3. Then copy the original Reports files within from CD PROJECT to new
REPORTS folder.
4. Close everything and then reopen your MyData folder. See if you can
expand folders - subfolders properly from original location. Then create a
shortcut and check it out. If the shortcut works fine then do the above
procedure for next subfolder. That means you have to check each and every
subfolder and files.

Let me know, How many files and subfolders are your CD PROJECT folder?

May this help you out to trace the problem, let us know!

Well, I think you've got it now. The folder has 164 subfolders and 452
files in it. When I split it into two folders and create shortcuts to
them, everything works right. So I guess there's a limit on the size
or complexity of folders which I didn't realize. Anyhow I'm satisfied
now and thank you very much for all your help.

This is what i found some where. Sound interesting and I start using it. Hope
you will like it. Let me know
====================================================

I'm using my system for checking e-mail and browsing the Internet. I
regularly use some five folders for saving my files.

I prefer to use keyboard instead of mouse operations. Is it possible to open
folders through keyboard shortcuts?

Ranjith K

It is possible to assign keyboard shortcuts to folders.

The workaround is creating shortcuts of these folders and placing these on
your desktop.

You may either use single-key keyboard shortcuts (say 0 to 9) to launch your
10 favourite folders (Directories) or use key combination (say Ctrl + Alt + a
to Ctrl + Alt + z) to launch 26 folders, etc.

Please note that you have to place these shortcuts directly on the desktop,
not in other folders.

To create a shortcut using key combination, please follow these steps:
Browse and select the folder that you would like to create a shortcut for.

Right-click the folder - Click "Sent to" - Desktop (create shortcut). This
will create the folder's shortcut on your desktop. Next, right-click the
folder shortcut - click Properties.

In the shortcut tab, Click the "shortcut key" textbox (which shows "None"),
press any alphabet that you like to give (say a).

Now the shortcut key textbox will show "Ctrl + Alt + A." Click ok.

This completes your exercise. If you would like to revert back, click on
"shortcut key" textbox and press Delete key. Now it becomes "None" instead of
"Ctrl + Alt + A". Click ok.

To create a single-key keyboard shortcut using numbers, please follow these
steps.

First turn on (enable) the "Num Lock" key. Browse and select the folder that
you would like to create a shortcut for. Right-click the folder - Click "Sent
to" - Desktop (create shortcut).

This will create the folder's shortcut on your desktop.

Next, right-click the folder shortcut - click Properties. In the shortcut
tab, Click the "shortcut key" textbox (which shows "None"), press any number
that you like to give (say 1) on your numeric keypad.

Now the shortcut key textbox will show "Num 1." Click ok.

This completes your exercise. If you would like to revert back, click on
"shortcut key" textbox and press Delete key, now it becomes "None" instead of
"Num 1". Click ok.

Please note "Num Lock" must be on (enabled) while you use these single-key
shortcuts.
