problem with a scondary graphics card

Pedro

Hello all,
I have an ASUS M2N-VM DVI mobo with 4GB of RAM, AMD Athlon x2 5400+
processor running Windows Vista x64. I want to use a second monitor so I
installed on the PCI-E slot an old GeForce 6200 TurboCache XFX 256 graphics
card. Graphics display priority is setup in BIOS as IGP->PCI->PCI-E.
Windows starts, identifies the new hardware, and install automatically the
driver, but, when doing this, computer gets completely hanged at some point,
and screen stays totally black. Only a pysical reset can get the computer
out of this situation.
I'd appreciate very much any help regarding this problem.

Thanks in advance,
Pedro

In the BIOS, set "Primary Graphics Adapter" to [PCIE->PCI->IGP] ?

That is the default, and should make your 6200 the primary display.

If you want another experiment to try, before making that change,
try moving the monitor adapter cable to all the various connectors,
one at a time, and find the graphics device that has an output
signal. With the BIOS setting you're currently using, Windows
could be rendered on the IGP (motherboard) output. While you
have the cable connected to the 6200.

Thanks for your answer Paul.
The problem is that wndows stops functioning. Even the Num-Lock key doesn't
respond
Trying to do the same under windows xp x64, display get trashed with
vertical white lines over a black
backgorund, so it seems a memory conflict between both cards, although I
don't know how to solve it.
On the other hand. I'd like to keep the IGP display as primary. the default
value set on my BIOS is
IGP->PCI->PCI-E, which should be ok if I want windows being shown on the
IGP.

Thanks,
Pedro

Stick one in a PCI slot, a very simple card such as a MATROX PCI 4M,
if one can still be found. Could be GFORCE TURBO EXTREME 256Meg XXX-
UBER is a little too "resource intensive" (when compatibility "issues"
arise with one piece of hardware stomping all over another). Then
graphics can be finicky, very -- right down drivers and their
revisions, DirectX, and just the right "touch" to get them all
shoehorned in together (gameplayer forums are where the hardcore
experts hang). First, though, establish that you can get NVIDA
running with BIOS IGP off, which conceivably may involve negating
prior driver installs for the MB's GPU. I passed on welding bedrails
for heavy multiple 19" CRT display stands when HDTVs became
affordable. 32" still fits righteous in front of my face at a
comfortable native AGP's OEM 1368x768 (old, an early Syntax making
waves when "big" got really real). I move and sit across to a
drummer's stool for guitar a 37" NEC and its computer, centered
entertainingly across the room, when reading PDF sheet music. Can't
even imagine both displays on this 10' conference table, though the
drummer's stood once did swivel 360 degrees before I wore it out and
JB Welded it tight. :)
