Problem with 2000 repair

T

TimR

I switched a working 2000 sp4 hard drive into another desktop with faster
cpu/motherboard...etc. The system starts fine but I have lost my mouse and
keyboard...they (keyboard anyway) are recognized in bios stqartup tho.

When I try to run "repair" from my 2000 installation cd...I get the
following error:
can not find a hard drive...can not continue.

The hard drive is recognized by the system...it is a SATA drive. I am using
the same Hard disk/SATA card combo ...that was installed on the drive
previously.

Is there anyway to get the repair option from the CD to recognize the SATA
drive ?

Again Windows starts...I get to the login screen...but I have no keyboard or
mouse functions...so I can not get any further ?

Thanks, Tim

You have to press the F6 key at the beginning of the setup routine and
have the drivers for the SATA card/controller on a floppy diskette. Pay
attention when the setup starts, at the bottom of the screen you will
see a message prompting you to Press F6 to install RAID drivers... If
you miss the prompt you will have to start the setup routine again. You
MUST supply the drivers on a floppy diskette, the setup program will not
accept them from any other media source.

Thanks John...do you know if XP has the drivers built into the setup
program...or if I upgraded to XP I'd have the same problem?

It will be the same for XP. If you have no diskette drive you can fit
one to the machine, even if only temporarily while you install Windows.
If you cannot do that you can incorporate the drivers to the Windows
CD or install Windows from a network share point. The diskette drive is
usually the easiest and quickest way to do it for single machine
installations.

Please pardon my intrusion on this thread. I have a couple of problems.
First when I try to post a question to any forum it fails.....i mean it does
nothing, no error message, no apperant blocked content...nothing. Any help
there?

Now the real question. I am trying to install 2003 server on my home box and
it crashes on set up. It works fine up to the point where it attempts to
bring up the GUI then blue screen....It is a stop error...I can post the hex
codes if it will help,..they are god awful long. I attempt to install
updated harddrive drivers thinking that might be it. I run the install, hit
f6 to tell the system i have 3rd party drivers then it tells me to install
the floppy in drive a. I have no floppy/a drive and havent found a way to
map one of my drives to an a drive. Any suggestions.

Thanks all

I think that the Microsoft servers are having hiccups, they're a bit on
the screwy side tonight.

If your problem with the Server 2003 installation is indeed with the F6
controller driver issue you would most likely get an 0x7b error on boot.
If you are doing an attended installation with the cd there is no
other way but the floppy diskette to supply the drivers, the setup
program *will not* accept them from any other media source. The only
way around it is to slipstream the drivers to the installation cd or to
install from a network distribution point. You can fit a diskette drive
to the computer or try with a USB floppy drive but only a handful of USB
floppy drives are compatible and recognized by the setup program.

A connected USB floppy disk drive does not work when you press F6 to
install mass storage drivers during the Windows XP installation process
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916196

Limited OEM driver support is available with F6 during Windows XP and
Windows Server 2003 setup

Basically boot the Windows Server 2003 install CD-Rom. Setup inspects your
computer's hardware configuration and then begins to install the setup and
driver files. When the Windows Server 2003 screen appears, press ENTER to
set up Windows 2003.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows Server 2003 CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2003 driver
for your drive controller in drive "A")

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows Server 2003 Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

If a raid controller is involved then you'll want to boot into controller
bios to configure the raid prior to starting Windows setup.

You guys are both right it does give me a 07 Stop error. I put the drivers
on a cd drive but alas I have no floppy and no network to load from. I have
heard mention of incorporating the drivers onto the 2003 intsall but dont
know how to go about it. I am working on my mcse so i dont think i am a
total idiot but this one had me stumped.

Dave are you saying if my timeing is right I can get past needing the floppy?

My dirve used the intel matrix manager utility to get the drivers. Thanks
for you guys help and patiemce. I have known a lot of people who simply
memprrize these cert test but I want to learn and to do so I feel like I need
to be able to check it out.

Any ideas?

Thanks

No, you'll need the floppy drive or look at doing an unattended install.
You'll only need the driver on the floppy. The files named oemsetup.inf,
txtsetup.oem, and the *.sys file for your controller.

You'll probably need to do the unattended install if no floppy drive is
available.

In the case of HP you might also give the SmartStart a go.

hey guys

I found these instuctions for the storage device that i have in my dell xps
system
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imst/sb/cs-020825.htm

I have extracted the intallation files per the instructions on the links
that you guiys provided and was a bit confused. I did a search and found the
link above whcih seems a lot simpler than the others. I will try them after
leaving this post but do you tthink it could be that easy

The unattended install required a bit more than the entries I posted but no
luck on getting 2003 server installed. I have managed to get the
'unattended' (uncompressed?) copy of 2003 on one of my hard drives...it runs
the unattened install without error messages but still the same error message
as before....and in the same place...as windows attempts to bring up the GUI
for the finalization of the install. I am at a loss, since it is trying to
bring up the gui it makes me think video but John thought the 7b errors were
likely hard drive errors. I am sure I made some assumptions on your intent
John, sorry if I did.

Do you guys have any more suggestions? Could I run a debug version to give
more info? Dell blows me off so they are worthless. Any help is
appreciated, thanks for your help!

Unfortuantly the problem continues. I get the same stop error message.
There are no errors prior to that message which comes up as the install is
attempting to load the GUI portion of the install. Would a video driver
problem cause this error? I assume the hard drive storage drivers loaded
properly during install. Any suggestions are welcomed and I appreciate all
you have helped with so far. I dont know who pays you but you desrve a raise!

Thanks

Looks like your assumption of the controller driver being installed is
incorrect.

Dammit!! Is that about all that would give that error message? I notice
during the install it still tells me that I can hit F6 to install 3rd party
drivers even though it is an 'unattended install'. If it were truly workin
as an unattended install would I still see that message?
