Problem wirh renaming documents

M

Milton Beychok

I have been using Word 97 for some years and my operating
system is Windows XP Home. Recently, a virus messed up my
computer and I had to reformat the hard disc and re-
install all my programs. All is now back to pre-virus
conditions and working well with one minor, but irritating
exception.

Prior to to my reformat and reinstalling, I had specified
that Word save all of my Word documents in a directory I
had created named "My Word Docs"... and I did the same
after the reinstalling.

Prior to the reinstalling, whenever I created and
saved a new Word document , it was saved into "My Word
Docs" with a .doc extension (for
example, "Miscellaneous.doc"). Then I could exit that new
document and open the directory window (File/Open)
while still in Word
and right click on that new .doc
file and use Rename to rename the file without any
extension (for example, "Miscellaneous") ... simply
because I prefer the directory listings that way.
Whenever I had a special need to have the .doc extension
(as when e-mailing a document), I could easily rename the
file again as "Miscellaneous.doc".

After the reinstalling, for some unknown reason, I
can no longer rename any files so as to eliminate the .doc
extension. I have tried everything I can think of to let
me rename files from within Word so as to eliminate
the .doc extension ... but no luck!

The only thing I can think of is that the new Normal.dot
file installed during the re-install is somehow different
than the Normal.dot file I had before the reinstall.

Can any tell me how get back to what I was able to do
before the reinstall??

As one further piece of information, I can exit Word
completely, go to my "My Word Docs" directory using
Windows Explorer and rename any files so as to exclude
the .doc extension and that works okay. But I cannot do
it from within Word as I was able to do before the re-
install.

I would appreciate your help,

Milton Beychok
