Problem viewing web pages - urlmon dll

I am having problems viewing some web pages, not all - my ISP is fine -
there is no discernible pattern - some open so far, but the actual page I am
waiting to see, the text bit in the middle, remains blank and white, then
nothing else happens - also, some links don't work, at all, nothing. No
error messages.

The MS Article You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing
occurs after you click a link -
Article ID:281679

- invites you to run regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and if does not succeed, as in my
case - it could not be found - to run another 7 dll's, one of which in my
case also failed - Msjava.dll.

I understand the Urlmon.dll can be problematic.

A search of my PC shows its only location to C:\1386, or CABS, I believe,
when it should also, I think, appear in Windows/System32 somewhere.

Might these dll's be affecting viewing web pages, and if so, can I reinstall
or restore them, and if so, how? Under Win98, I could do that in System
something, from CABS.

Advice/solutions gratefully received

Are you posting from the problem machine?

Did you enable the Advanced Search options to include hidden files and
folders as well as system folders?

Did you navigate to %windir%\System32 (e.g., C:\Windows\System32) and look
for it?

You may have made a typo:

Start > Run > copy/paste the following line into the box

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

and click OK.

Ran it and it succeeded

But substituting msjava.dll, it still not succeed.

I have a Java folder in Programs, with 2 sub-folders, named j2re1.4.2 and
....4.2_05

Java VM does not appear in IE/Options/ Security/Internet/Custom Level, never
has

It does appear in /Advanced as 'Java (Sun)' 'Use 4.2._05 for applet'

That's why you couldn't register MSJAVA.DLL.

Thanks. Java appears 3 times in the folder and none marked as damaged.

To repeat, does all this finally mean, or not, that urlmon.dll or any others
mentioned so far have any relevance to my problem, as set out in my
originating post

If not, are you guys (I know who you are) able to comment on or give me any
pointers or possible solutions?

I still say the repair value of the regsvr32 commands in KB831429
is superior to the ones given in KB281679. Given the appropriate
caveats for shell32.dll and msjava.dll the article could be suggested
for all OS. ;)

For more possible non-malware factors I suggest looking at Encoding,
Fonts and Language settings.

*I* was referring to the following regsvr32 commands given in this
MSKB article. I will include the title and link to it this time in case that
helps clarify the point. I have also inserted extra spaces between
the each command and its arguments for clarity.

Notice that the same set of modules is being registered in each case
but with the syntax given by KB831429 some additional processing
is being specified (e.g. using the /i switch where applicable).

In fact, that same additional processing was also provided by
the old IE Repair facility and (intended to be provided by) a new
(but fast slipping into obscurity <eg>) XPsp2 feature called /rereg
Except for the addition of msjava.dll and shell32.dll both lists
could be regarded as small but important subsets of the other
more complete repair tools. And because of the /i switches
the repair subset provided by KB831429 is _greater than_
the repair subset provided by KB281679.

to a repair of IE/reinstall of XP, or an upgrade to SP2 which I have been
avoiding.

That said, here is a conundrum. I use Outpost Pro 2.6, default settings, as
just installed and waiting to see. This has 3 modes, Allow most, Wizard and
Block most. Ordinarily I use Wizard. When I use that or Block Most, web
pages not open, links not work, some of the time. If, however, I switch to
Allow most, the problem disappears. A bit flaky, but pages that refused
point blank to open, open, and links work. Agnitum forums cannot explain,
yet. Should not use Allow most - have rules, but some time down the line
before I could use Allow most with confidence.

I have only been trying to explain my comment about the Repair suggestion.

FWIW it looks to me now that your situation is analogous to
having a door that closes and expressing surprise that you can't
walk through it in that state? ;)
