Problem Upgrading from Home Prem to Ultimate

B

I purchased the Ultimate upgrade DVD from Amazon. I failed to disable the
anti virus before running upgrade. It failed after running 2 hours with
error message that it could not configure two system components. It restored
the Premium system, but it killed my PC Cillin software. I re-ran the update
two more times with same results. I purchased and installed Norton
Antivirus, and I don't care to try the upgrade again for fear it will kill
Norton. One option is to do a clean install, but I would have to reinstall
everything else which I hate to have to do.

Can anyone help, please?

Which would prefer a buggy system or a working system? If the cost of
getting your system in working order is to reinstall everything, then thats
just the cost you have pay if you want to use your system. Did you run the
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor before upgrading? The only thing I can suggest
before attempting the clean installation is a System Repair:

Boot from your Windows Vista DVD, select the System Repair Option > on the
setup screen, select 'Repair Computer > Select your installation of Windows

I agree with Andre's comments, but if you want to try the upgrade again,
open msconfig and uncheck all of the items under the Services and Startup
tabs that pertain to Norton. Reboot then try your upgrade again. After the
upgrade, return to msconfig and recheck those items.

I installed Vista SP1 RC1 and found that it wouldn't install with the
anti-virus program - BitDefender - running and that simply right-clinking
the icon in the System Tray and choosing "exit" didn't do the trick. You
might be running into the same problem.

David, you were right on target. I did exactly as you suggested in msconfig
and ran the upgrade and in less than three hours, I am done. Fantastic!!! I
can't tell you how much I appreciate your help and the advice of others who
respond so quickly to the less knowledgeable like myself.

For what it is worth, I also used a tip from Scottyhn. He said go to
Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features/Turn Windows Features on and Off.
Uncheck XPS Viewer under MS.netFramework. Uncheck remote differential
compression. Uncheck Windows DFS Replication Service.

I used both of your tips at the same time, so either one or both worked.
Obviously, neither tip hurt anything. Again thanks a bunch. I wished I had
checked the forum on Christmas Day. It would have saved my ruined day.
