problem updating links unless sources are open

I am trying to update a worksheet with external links and if the source to
those links are not open the spreadsheet returns a #value! error. Any
suggestions on how to fix this. I'm using Excel 2003.
 
Some functions require the external link to be open. On problems links, You
may need to reformat the link functions to allow closed updating.
