Problem trying to run sfc /scannow

I need to scan to see if I can resolve minor things which are
annoyances rather than problems (perhaps me deleting something I
shouldn't have done when cleaning and tidyingup the PC).

The scan wont run and calls for WinXP Home CD which I dont have, only a
PC Manufacturers Recovery CD which isnt accepted.

I couldnt see a folder in Windows for i386 so I downloaded it from the
Manufacturers Recovery CD, all 400+ Mb's, and inserted it into
C:\Windows then changed the Sourcepath in Registry as he proposed.
The idea being to make Windows seek the i386.

It didnt work. I still cant do Start/Run/sfc /scannow and I dont know
how to proceed further.
Something is amiss, I cant tell you what, Any Suggestions Please

Instead of using Start/Run I've also tried the CMD prompt but the same
thing happens.

The slider starts in the Windows File Protection, it gets about one
sixth of the way and the box appears demanding the WinXP Home CD which
I dont have.
I can keep cancelling the request but it doesnt move the slider any
further.

All Clear Now.
I managed to get a WinXP Home SP2 CD from a neighbour and have
reinstalled from that, the niggling problems seem to have gone and sfc
/scannow ran properly.

BUT, now I'm worried again.
I rushed this job and reinstalled over the existing installation.
Is it likely to cause me problems with duplicate entries and if I run
Registry Mechanic will that remove any bottlenecks or dead ends.
