SFC /SCANNOW problems

Nate

Ok, I have Windows XP Home SP2.

I click run, type in SFC/ SCANNOW and I get:

****
Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the
DLL Cache.

Insert your Windows XP [PROFESSIONAL] Service Pack 2 CD now.
****

I have my Windows XP Home SP2 disc in, because that is what I installed on
my computer... wtf?

Thanks!

It wants you to put your windows CD in the CD DRIVE so it can get some files
off it. It's not talking about your hard drive.

This might apply.

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition:

Sounds like you /may/ have Windows XP Pro installed instead of your copy of
Windows XP Home.

Please type the following in the Run dialog box or Command Prompt.

winver

This will confirm what Operating System you are using.

If you're OS is indeed Windows XP Pro then have you ever brought your
computer in for repair?

Um.. How do I know if it did anything? I ran it, the progress bar went to
100, then it closed. No status messages or anything...

It replaces corrupt files silently. IIRC, any errors if any, are logged into C:\Windows\Setupapi.log.

Look in the Event Viewer under the System category. To open the event
viewer: Control Panel (Classic) > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Look
for a source called "Windows File Protection". There should be at least two
event with the mentioned source name, one for starting "sfc" and one for
ending "sfc". If System File Protection has replaced any files then there
will be more than 2 events with "Windows File Protection" as the source.
Double-click the event to read the details.
