problem trying to connect to windows update page

when trying to connect to the windows update page with IE6(version
6.0.2800.1106), I keep getting the following error message in a pop up window:

char:3
error:automation server can't create object
code:0
url:http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

I've already had the suggestion of updating the urlmon.dll, didn't work,
and resetting my internet security settings, didn't work.

any ideas on how to correct this so I can access the update page? any help
will be greatly appreciated!
