Problem Starting Up (Windows XP, Toshiba Laptop)

Hi,

I have been having this problem for about a month, and wasn't really
provided a solution when I called Toshiba support.

I have a Satellite P25, and it's 15 months old. This is the first issue of
any sort I've had since owning the computer. Anyway, here goes:

-About one month ago the computer began stopping at start-up. Sometimes,
before the "Welcome" screen came up, a row of lateral lines would appear, as
if it was detailing start-up progress time. Sometimes it would completely
freeze and and not actually get to the Welcome screen (rare).

-Then, I started getting a sort of error message. The screen went black, and
it said, "Computer did not start up properly." It said this could be because
the computer was unproperly shut down, or new programs. I had the option of
starting in safe mode, starting up normally, or stating up with the last
known succesful configuration.

-The first time this happened, I picked "last known succesful
configuration." It worked, except Norton Internet Security no longer worked
(I upgraded from Anti-Virus about two weeks before this started happening --
are the two connected?)

-So I did a "System Restore" to the day before, and it worked fine for about
two weeks.

-Then I started getting the message that "Windows did not start up
normally." This time, I told the computer to just start up normally. It did.
All seemed fine.

-But now I'm getting that message with increasing frequency. Whereas it was
once per week or so, now it's every other day. It doesn't occur everytime I
re-start, but maybe one out of three times.

-Called Toshiba, and they had me defragment the hard drive and use the
"error checking" tool. No errors. They also had me do a command prompt (a
"scannow" prompt). Again, no errors.

-They then told me to do a virus scan and remove spyware, which didn't seem
like much of a solution to me.

-Am I making any sense? Does this sound remotely familiar to anyone?
Everything is working fine, except the start-up. Any direction is greatly
appreciated.

I thank you for your time,
Todd

My opinion of Norton isn't very good, that could well be a problem.
Did you use start>run chkdsk /r ?
Did you use SFC (system File Checker)?
Have you rum memtest or such to be sure you don't have failing RAM?

Todd i have the same problem with a toshiba m35sx-161 laptop..i downloaded
the toshiba updates which didnt help either. In my opinion it is a toshiba
problem.I agree norton causes lots of problems, but this was a problem before
the norton installation,Would be really helpful if anyone knows the cause.its
really a nusiance.

First step is to remove NIS.

Yes, you are making perfect sense. You are simply enjoying the Windoze
eXPerience. Some may call this "bit rot", where for some unknown reason,
Windoze degrades over time, becomes more error prone and unstable and
ultimately needs to be reinstalled from scratch.

But hey, if you're going to insist on using a toy operating system to run
your computer, then that's just what's to be expected. So get used to it.
Your experiences are right in the middle of the bell curve and not at all
unique. Prepare to live with it or move on to a real operating system.
