Hi All,

My PC has been behaving strangly. Sometimes when i start
it up, it shows me the error message.

======================================================
Windows could not start because the follwoing file is
missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\Config\System

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows
setup using he original setup CD-ROM.
Select "r" at the first screens to start repair.

======================================================

I got my machine completely rebuilt so many times, but i
still getting the same error message. The funny thing is,
i get bypass it by a few reboot, it works fine afterward.
However, i want to get rid of it once and for all. Anyone
has any idea of why it is happening? I suspect this has
something to do with my hard-disk.

Anyone any suggestion is welcome and is there any tool i
can do to diagnose this kind of problem? Because i
doesn't show me any disk error when i perform a window
based scan-disk operation.

Your help is greatly apppreciated!!

This issue can occur if the System or Software hive for
the Windows XP installation is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Use the Recovery Console Tool
To restore a damaged registry hive, use the Recovery
Console to restore the backup copy of the hive from the
Repair folder. The Repair folder contains a copy of the
system's registry hives that were created after the first
successful startup of Windows XP.

Hi,

thank you very much for your information.

This problem is repeating after the rebuild, and i don't
have to recover the system file using the Recovery
console, what i do is just restart the machine a few time,
then it will be fine afterwar.

does this indicate a bad RAM in my system?

Cheers

Hi Ken,

It indicates a corrupt registry. See:

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If that does nothing, use a working PC to read this first...

Related info is here...

describes a three-step process to extract a copy of the registry
from the System Restore SVI folder.

Info on dealing with corruption issues...

Reinstall/repair tutorials (if needed) are here...

After your system is restored, the ERUNT utility available here may
make it easier to fix the problem if it recurs...

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.

Hi,

It could, if you want to check the memory, there are free programs here:

http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

But keep in kind that a thorough test can only be done with test equipment
at a computer shop. Software tests are not perfect in diagnosing these
issues. At the price of memory today, you may find that the test costs more
than a replacement stick.

Yes, very likely bad memory or some other serious hardware error.
Possibly a defective hard drive. Test your memory first and run some
diagnostics on your hard drive. A good memory testing program can be
downloaded from here:

http://www.memtest86.com/

To test your hard drive, go to the maker's web site and download their
diagnostic software.

Hi,

Motherboard needs to be checked by a shop. Most hard drive manufacturers
have downloadable drive diagnostics that run from a boot floppy. Be cautious
with them, as some tests will wipe data from the drive (should you be
interested in retaining such).
