Problem (& solution?) connecting USB Olympus camera to XP

I was trying to add an Olympus camera to my Xp machine via USB and it wasnt
recognised. This seems to be a fairly common problem.

However it was recognised on my other XP machine. There is a diff between
the2 - the one that worked has a Lexar reader attached and so has the safely
remove hardware icon in the tray.

I wonder if this is significant? Anyone know how to force that icon into
the tray of the other machine? - I have only found a post that says that it
will be automatically inserted if needed

This is what happens with my Olympus 5050Z and XP SP1.

1. Switch Camera OFF.

2. Connect Camera to USB port (or hub).

3. Ensure camera is set to the 'review' setting (ie not to any of
the picture-taking modes).

4. Switch Camera ON. - Computer sounds the USB 'beep' and the
'safely-remove' icon appears in the system tray (that's if it is not
there for someother device).

5. Do your downloads.

6. Click on the 'safe-to-remove' icon and select the appropriate
'drive' for removal.

7. Switch off camera.

8. Disconnect USB cable.

IF this sequence is not followed exactly - XP can get confused.

YMMV.
