problem simply copying data files to a CD.....

I have Window XP pro edition. I want to back up finacial data (from
Quicken) to a CD Rom. I am pretty good with a PC, but not too good with
copying files to a CD.

I went to the HELP info available in the "Windows Help and Support
Center". Here's the exact text I followed:"To copy files and folders to a CD
Insert a blank, writable CD into the CD recorder.
Open My Computer.
Click the files or folders you want to copy to the CD. To select more
than one file, hold down the CTRL key while you click the files you
want. Then, under File and Folder Tasks, click Copy this file, Copy
this folder, or Copy the selected items.
If the files are located in My Pictures, under Picture Tasks, click
Copy to CD or Copy all items to CD, and then skip to step 5.
In the Copy Items dialog box, click the CD recording drive, and then
click Copy"The above instruction are easy for me to follow.

But, when I get to the last step shown above, I get Dialog Box titled
"Insert Disc", with the message: "Please insert a disk into drive D".

I have a new, *never used*, 700 mb CR-R in the D drive..I tried same
instructions with another identical CD-R. Exact message. It appears
that the softwares does not recognize the CD ROM is in the D drive. (I
have verified that my CD drive Is in fact, drive D).

What do I need to do next? Thanks!! : )

you need a program like Nero to burn.

bigJim,
thanks for asking. I dont know if its a CDROM burner. how Can I find
out? There is no indication on the front of the CD ROM Driver.

Does it have to be a cdrom burner to do it?

If it's not a cdrom burner, is the solution a new cdrom, or is it a
software solution?

Thanks!!

Look in Windows Explorer and see what the drive is called. If it says CD
drive (D:) then it is just a CD reader. If it says CD-RW Drive (D:) then it
is a burner. You have to have a burner to burn a CD.

I have a CD-RW Drive. I have been able to use CD-R discs and copy files from
the My Documents Folder to the CD. However, when I try to use a CD-RW disc,
the Wizard appears to copy the files I have selected but when I check the
disc, the window shows that there are no files on the CD

Thanks, RA. It's a plain CD reader.....I guess I can buy a CD Burner
and switch it out pretty easily, huh?
and Windows will recognize it, etc.

I'd really like to use CD RW or DVD RW's. What I want to do is simply
back up my Quicken data, and digital pics to have backup
copies...that's my goal!! Any advice is welcome!!

Get an external USB DVD drive - it should come with appropriate software. An
external drive has the advantage of being able to be moved to another
machine.
