Can somebody tell me if the computer that's physically cabled to a
wireless access point/router and DSL modem shuts down for any reason,
will this prevent the other conputers on the network from accessing the
Internet? Does it have to be running all the time?

Wireless network consisting of:

3 computers (WINXP),
Linksys Wireless Access Point,

I assume that all of your computers are plugged into the router or connected
to it by wireless. If so, shutting down any one of them will not affect the
others ability to connect to the Internet. However, if your modem is
connected to one computer by USB, you may have a different problem. An
ethernet connected modem to the router is the way to go, not to any one
computer.
