I thought I would get this into the record for the benefit of others
having trouble with an obscure email problem.

The symptom is that all of a sudden you can no longer send emails.
Variations are that you can send emails, but not replies to emails;
another is that problem is intermittant.

Various similar error messages come back from the smtp server, but are
all related to the smtp server closing the connetion. Keywords from
the error messages and smtp log are inserted below.

From my research, apparently everyone is baffled as to the cause,
including Microsoft. Here is the solution for only one situation.

If you are using a Linksys router, models BEFSR11 or BEFSR41 (not
v.3), do not upgrade the firmware to v.1.46 (24-Jun-2004). It is
buggy and will cause this behaviour. If you have already upgraded the
firmware, you will have to downgrade it. You can get previous
firmware versions from:

ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41

Note that the firmware for the BEFSR11 is the same as for the BEFSR41.
They are basically the same unit, except that the BEFSR11 doesn't have
an incorporated switch.

Post all errors in their entirety.

Is your problem in MS Outlook or MS Outlook Express? If the latter, do you
have MS Office or MS Outlook installed?

All of the following KB arrticles relate to MTU settings and Linksys
routers:
