Problem renameing, copying and highlighting folders 'n' files

Hi :)

The problems I'm describing started happening recently, only happens on the
external USB connected hard drive I use for storage, not on the main C drive.

Sometimes when I try to rename a folder/file, regardless of the folder it's
in, I'll get an error message saying this

the drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file
names or names containing blanks or any of the following characters \ / : ,
;* ? " < > |

At the same time, when I try to copy a folder/file from point a to point b,
regardless of the folder it's being copied to, I get this error message

The destination does not support long file names. Please enter a name for
this file

And it won't let me use any filename longer than 8 characters

Finally, sometimes when I go to double click on a folder/file to open it,
usually when I've been in another program for awhile, the external HD will
chatter for several seconds as HD's do and and all it does is to highlight
the folder/file instead of opening it. Same thing when I just single click
to highlight.

Anyone know what might be causing these problems and how to fix them?
Closing all Windows Explorer windows, unplugging the external HD, plugging it
back in and reopening the windows makes the problem go away as does logging
off from Windows and a full reboot, but I'd much rather the problem not
happen to start with.

The only programs installed recently are upgrading to newer versions of
Opera and Slipstream, an image accelerator that works with Opera.

Thanx in advance :)

How is the external HD formatted ... FAT, FAT32, or NTFS.

Both the external HD and the main C drive have NTFS listed under File System
when I right click on each drive's icon and select properties.
