problem regarding NTFS

mazhar abbas

HI,

My Name is MR.MAZHAR ABBAS ([email protected])

I have Computer at my home it has
40 GB Hard Disk ( divided into 20 & 20 ie C:drive &
D:drive)
128 MB Ram.
Intel Pentium 4 procesessors with 1.7 Ghz & other
configrations
I have 2 Operating System ie WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION &
WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL
I have installed WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION on C:drive &
WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL on D:drive
I want to convert My D:drive into NTFS through WINDOWS XP
PROFESSIONAL
so that i can run ORACLE9i SERVER on my computer
I went through command prompt & given the Convert function
( convert D: /fs:ntfs) than it asked me to convert Y/N i
entered Y
it shows me this errors !

Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.
Convert may run if this volume is dismount first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume ?<Y/N>?

Convert cannot gain into exclusive access to the D:drive,
so it cannot convert it now.
would you like to schedule it to be converted the next
time the system restarts<Y/N>?

So i want to know what is the problem?
what will dismount will do to my drive if i entered Yes?
What is the meaning of Dimount?
How should i convert the D: to NTFS?
Will i loss all my data on D: drive? (REMEMMBER MY WINDOWS
XP PROFESSIONAL IS INSTALL on D:)
IF i convert my D: drive to NTFS will D:drive accessable
on WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION?
Will WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL work if i convert to NTFS
B'coz my WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL is installed on D: drive

SO please sir help me out i m in great confusion, Early
response from ur side would be highly appreciated.

THANKING YOU SIR,

MAZHAR ABBAS

Hi Mazhar,

There is no problem. Basically the convert utility is reporting that there
are processes running that have open files on the drive and that utility
can't continue unless it resorts to breaking those ties. The correct
answers to the questions would be "N" and "Y" respectively.

Converting the D: drive/partition to NTFS will make it inaccessible when
running Windows 98, but Windows XP will still continue to function w/out any
issues because the NT file system is native to it.

Dear Mr. Abbas,

One more thing. You mention having 128 MB of RAM.
In my opinion, this is really on the low side. I recommend increasing RAM to
at least 256 MB, if not 512 MB. You will be happy you made this change.
Memory is cheap.

It cannot convert the partition that XP is running on while the system
is running. If you reply Y to that last message it will set it up to
happen at the next boot: so say Y and reboot for it to be done.

But first read up at www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm for a way to avoid
ending with 512 byte clusters, which is likely if the partition was not
formatted to FAT 32 using XP itself during its setup (ie if you made
the partition from your Win98 startup floppy first you need to take
action to avoid this trouble)
