Converting Fat32 to NTFS

E

Ernie

Would like to convert my C drive partition from Fat32 to NTFS and got the
following instructions by going to Start>run>cmd>help convert.

The instructions last paragraph has me doubting whether I should convert of
not. It reads as follow: "Convert cannot run because the volume is in use
by another process. Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID."

What does this mean?

For your info, I upgraded from WinMe to XP. Whether that's relevant or not,
I don't know. All help appreciated. Thanks

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

C:\Documents and Settings\default>help convert
Converts FAT volumes to NTFS.

CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] [/CvtArea:filename] [/NoSecurity] [/X]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
/FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume is to be converted to NTFS.
/V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.
/CvtArea:filename
Specifies a contiguous file in the root directory to be
the place holder for NTFS system files.
/NoSecurity Specifies the converted files and directories security
settings to be accessible by everyone.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid.

C:\Documents and Settings\default>convert C:/FS:NTFS
The type of the file system is FAT32.
Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)

You cannot convert C: underfoot. You have to go on and end by setting
the conversion to run at next boot. But first read
www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm for precautions needed to avoid having
512 byte clusters in the result - not a good thing

Solved the problem. Converted to NTFS by using Partition Magic. That
leaves me with one question. Since I converted C drive to NTFS, do I also
need to convert system_sav (D:) which is a FAT32 and if I do will this
interfere with XP's Restore Points System?

No, different volumes can have different file systems and work just fine
in XP, so you don't have to convert the D: drive.
