Hope this is the correct NewsGroup in which to ask this. Asked a dr. for a
copy of my x-rays, which his girl put on a CD for me. She checked it and
read it OK. I tried it at home, and (there were 4 .tif files) got the error
message (It tried to open in Windows Picture & Fax Viewer) "drawing failed".
Am I doing something wrong? Or is it the CD? (Although it opened for the
girl in the office??)

Hi Joy

The "drawing failed" error message is unfortunately a pretty common one
from the Picture and Fax Viewer. It can be caused by a wide variety of
problems: from corrupt TIFF files, all the way to configuration problems
on your PC.

One way to isolate the cause is to try a different viewer application.
Irfanview is a well-known and very popular app which you can download.
It is simple to install and use, and it is free, for non-commercial use.
Irfanview has been around for over 10 years, and is actively maintained
by its developer Irfan Skiljan (who also seems to be a friendly, helpful
guy!).

Download from here:
http://www.irfanview.com

If you find that an alternative viewer such as Irfanview, also has
problems opening the x-ray TIFFs, then there is probably some problem
with the files or the CD-ROM, itself.

But if Irfanview can open and view the files correctly, this indicated
the "drawing failed" error was caused by some problem in Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer, itself. From there, you could continue to diagnose and
troubleshoot the problem; or you could decide to stick with the third
party viewer.

Other folks may have additional ideas for you, hope this helps.

I've seen this error before but have never
seen a dependable solution.

You can force a reinstall of Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer with the following command
but there's no guarantee that it will make a
difference.

Go to...Start / Run and type
(or copy/paste):

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

(yes, the space after the 2 and the space
after the i is required)

Press...Enter...

You should see a dialog box that says:
'DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shimgvw.dll
succeeded'

My suggestion would be to download and
install the freeware IrfanView and use it to
view the TIFF files.

A good first step might be to phone her and ask her
what operating system and image software she uses.
I'd expect somebody processing x-rays to be using
something of professional grade that is able to handle
humungous-sized files.

When I get a "failed" message for an image, it's
because the structure of the file didn't match what
it's supposed to be for a file with that extension;
in your case, for a .tif file. This may or may not be
your problem.

The suggestions from both Andrew and John are both good, particularly
the suggestion to try IrfanView.

However, a doc friend of mine has told me that MRI images usually
require a special application to display them, and that the application
is almost always present on the CD. I don't know if this applies to
x-ray images as well, but try looking at the contents of the CD with
WIndows Explorer and see if there is something there other than the
image files.

It's also possible that the computer at the doctor's office had a
special viewing application that the "girl" used to view your CD. If you
can't view the files with IrfanView and there's no viewer on the CD,
call the doctor's office and ask what program they use to view the files.

Many thanks to all. I'll try these suggestions over the weekend and if
nothing works on this end, I'll print the suggestions and show the office
girl on Tuesday (when I'm to pick up another CD she said she'd make for me).

Couldn't wait for the weekend - I downloaded Irfanview tonight and it worked
great! THANK YOU!
