folders.

Please advise.

You say "can't open most of". Which files and/or
folders can you open? Can you create a shortcut to
explorer.exe (right-click on desktop, select New->
Shortcut) on your desktop?

How long was the system running normally, and
what happened?

My computer started acting up after I caught my nephew
downloading music. I don't know everything he did that day
but it put spyware that high jacked my web browser and kept
kicking out web pages faster than I could close them. I
finally had to shut down Internet Explorer with the task
manager. I got rid of the spyware but I get an
explorer.exe error that tells me It's encountered a problem
and has to shut down. The only files I can open are
excel/word files, Registry Mechanic, and Spybot - Search &
Destroy I can't open anything else on my desktop. I can go
online using Netscape via the start menu. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Rich

I would suggest you backup your data, if you haven't already
done so, and reinstall - but really you should make an effort
to stop this sort of thing from happening again. So I have to
ask, what sort of firewall do you have? I'm presuming that
this is a single user machine, not on a network. If he was
downloading music, I assume you have a DSL connection,
so what router are you using?

Routers are fine for blocking incoming but poor at blocking
outgoing - and Win2K has several well intentioned programs
that 'listen' on the network/internet which can be exploited by
hackers, so the firewall has to be configured to minimize or
prevent possible exploitation.
