Problem opening exe files

Hi! :)

My laptop has WinXP Home. I've noticed that some of the exe files for
programs I often use absolutely will not open when I try entering path to the
exe in my browser and select "open" as well as other means. Others will not
open unless I select the program they're for in the start/programs list.

The question on my mind is just why are exe's so picky about how they're
opened? I don't understand how opening them through a browser, start/run and
clicking on them in Windows Explorer is different than opening them through
start/programs. What am I missing?

Thanx in advance :)

G'Day Clouded,

I design Access databases. I do so exactly as the client specifies. Sometimes
they want to see everything - meaning the database window.

Now many of the Forms I create are sub-forms - meant to be used as part
of a larger (container) Form.

So I had the sub-forms check on open whether they were being used
in this way. If not they close themselves (to avoid confusion).

The some IDIOT asks why some of the forms ...
...... I often use absolutely will not open and says ...
The question on my mind is just why are [they] so picky about how they're
opened?

So I modified all the sub-forms to display a message box that stated they were
not meant to be used like that, and would now close.

I charged him an "Arm 'n a Leg" for this extra work, and he was DELIGHTED!

Cool .....

The shortcut you click on in the Start Menu might have a starting
directory specified. Depending on the program, that might or might not
be important. Simply finding the *.exe in Windows Explorer and
double-clicking it would make it think that the directory where it
resides is the current directory. That might or might not work.

And I don't know what you mean by entering the path to the exe in
your browser. I would not expect to be able to start a program by
typing the path to its *.exe into IE or Firefox.

For example, when I want to open Registry Toolkit, I hit the link in my
bookmarks whoch goes to

C:\Program Files\Registry Toolkit\RegToolkit.exe

And when the open/save/cancel box appears, I hit Open and the program opens
as if I selected it in start/programs

I often like to put links to my own files in my bookmarks rather than sort
through start/programs and so I don't forget I have certain programs, such as
games and to not forget to run important scans (Norton, Spybot, etc)
