Problem opening AD

When I try to open active directory users and computers, Receive the
following error:
Naming information cannot be located because:
The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist.
Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly
configured and is currently online.

Only system in our network for web hosting. Done all virus scans and keep it
updated with all security packs, etc. as required. Locked down and shows no
signs of being hacked. Behind firewall so sure that is not the case.

Have double checked all DNS entries and nothing has changed. Been installed
for over a year and been working fine til last week when i tried to add
another user to system. Major issue since it is a webserver with multiple
users and webpages.

Nothing in event viewer except for a RSM error that cannot manage the tape
library. Another issue for the tape software people.

Thanks in advance for info

The computer you're doing this from is pointing to the DC for DNS?

Make sure the pc is pointing to the appropriate machine for DNS and run
DCDiag and Netdiag /fix

Yes, it is the primary doamin controller and also controls DNS for all of the
web sites.
I know i can do a dcpromo and make it a stand alone server but past
experience tells me that this will remove all users and passwords and have to
recreate all of them after done doing the downgrade. Several hundred users
names and not all passwords are known by some of the older users.
Thanks
