Problem on setting Dynamic IP address. Static IP is OK.

MattK

I have Win XP Pro with own build P4 machine. Hooked up with WatchGuard Fire Box 4 port router. Other
PC's are Win2K and Win98se. Peer to Peer network + DSL.

I can connect to network (TCP/IP) OK, but only when I configure IP address manually.

My current setting for TCP/IP is:
IP address : 192.168.1.112
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Default: 192.168.1.1

Proffered DNS Server : 4.2.2.1
Alternate DNS Server : 4.2.2.2

When I use that configuration, I can connect to LAN & internet.
But when I select"Obtain IP address automatically". I can not connect
to LAN & Internet.

I tried "Repair this connection" function, I will get following dialog box
saying:

Repair this connection

The following steps of the repair operation failed:
Renewing the IP address
Refreshing all DHCP leases and re-registering DNS names

I have been using static IP address for my PC since beginning, therefore
I didn't notice this problem. Now, it seems like DHCP is not working. Still
I can connect LAN with static IP, it is not immediate problem, but I want to
know why I can not select dynamic IP address on my PC.

Any suggestions???

Thanks in advance.

Matt.

Is there a firewall program running on the PC? If so, try
un-installing it.

Can the other computers connect to the LAN using DHCP?

I am having a similar problem with 2 WXPProSP1 pc´s.
One is up and running nice, with working Internet.
The other is a laptop with a Belkin NIC.(PCcard)
I have a firewal but it is disabled.

PC1 Host:
ICS, No firewall. DHCP. No bridges. Internet conn works. Two NIC, one for
LAN and one for Internet ADSL. ICS on Internet ADSL NIC Conn. No firewall on
any conn. ICS assigns 192.168.0.1 on PC1.

Cable between puters is crossed (red) directly connected with no hub or
anything.

Laptop.
Network set up using guide and floppy from PC1. First it did not worked,
then it worked, then after making no changes, the net died. I am stuck now.
cant ping. Unable to renew. Ipconfig sees an IP ok but I cant ping that IP
from PC1. Timeout.

I have tried just about anything but for assigning static IP:s to both.
I am employed as a network admin, but that was before XP : /

Thanks for any advice. I´ll be happy to fill in if needed.

Richard

Hello...

Yes, Firewall is off. Other PCs (Win2K, Win98se) are using dynamic IP addressing.
IP address are assinged by WatchGuard router / hub.

Somehow, my Win XP+SP1 PC lost ability to assing IP address by using DHCP.
Did I mess up registry? I am not sure.

Make sure that the DHCP Client service is running. Look in Event
Viewer for any relevant error messages.

I have the similar problem.

Mine is XP Home. After I deleted two SpyWare/Adware (SahAgent and Wupdater). The networking function doesn't work.

Now, I reinstalled the XP and changed the registry according to Q329441.

But still it cannot get IP from the DHCP. The DHCP Client is running. Other PCs works well.
With DHCP enabled, there is no default gateway. ping works fine for 127.0.0.1 and computer IP.
If I disable DHCP and use previous IP, ping doesn't work for the default gateway.

When using net view,
[Information on using net view]
C:\>net view /network:nw \\My_PC_Name
System error 1204 has occurred.
The specified network provider name is invalid.

What can I do now?

Following is the information in Event Viewer after restart.
