Assigning Static IP Address Help

Hi,

I am using a D-link DSL-G604T router and it is unable to assign static ip
address to specific mac addresses. At least i do not think it has that
function. I tried assigning static ip address for my computer through network
connections> LAN connection>TCP/IP

What values should i put for the subnet mask, DNS and gateway? I tried
pointing it to my router, i could conenct to the router but not to the
internet. My computer may be connected to more than 1 network sometimes.

So if i assign a static ip address, would this affect me logging into
another network? I read that i could set an alternate configuration for
static ip address, but what if i am connecting to a network which i know
nothing about. For example, i connect to my own home network and school
network as well.

I am also sure that the ip i am assigning is outside the range of DHCP. I
would like to assign static ip address is because my network places is unable
to update the computers on my workgroup.

And not allowing me to access another computer's files. But when i entered
the ip address of that computer, i can access it right away. However, the ip
address may change and so i am considering setting up static ip address.

Suggestions anyone? Thanks

assuming the router IP is 192.168.0.1, you may assign 192.168.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.0.1 and DNS 192.168.0.1.

Configure the network connection to obtain an IP address
automatically, then look at the values that the router assigns it for
subnet mask, DNS, and gateway. Use the same values when you assign a
static IP address.

Hi,

If i assign the same values that my router assigs for DNS, gatway, etc, will
i be able to connect to another network? By setting a static ip address, will
this affect the connectivity to other networks is my main concern.

Because my computer is connected to a few networks. Thanks

The static IP address and other settings for your home network won't
work on other networks unless those networks use the same settings as
yours. That's not likely.

Why do you want to assign a static address on your network?

Specifying an alternate configuration with the static settings won't
do what you want. That only works when you connect to a network that
doesn't have a DHCP server.

These programs let you store multiple network configurations and
switch between them easily:

Hi Steve,

Why i want to assign static ip? Well, i get so frustrated when i want to
transfer files between 2 computers that are switched on and logged on to the
network, but could not find any of them in the workgroup.

But when i enter the ip address that was assigned to each computer, i could
then access the files. And so i would like to create a shortcut that allows
me to access the files without me finding out what ip address it is assigned
today.

Because the next day the same computer may be assigned a different ip
address. And i would need to find out, etc. That's why i would like to assign
static ip.

The links you provided me below, will allow me to assign a static ip for one
network and use dynamic ip address for another? Thanks

When you say "could not find any of them in the workgroup", do you
mean that they didn't appear in My Network Places?

In my experience, network browsing using My Network Places is so
unreliable that I recommend not using My Network Places at all.

You don't need to assign a static IP address to get reliable access to
the other computer. Create a shortcut to the other computer, and
specify the location of the item as "\\computer", substituting the
actual computer name. For example, to create a shortcut to a computer
named "desktop", specify the location as:

\\desktop

Yes.

Hi Steve,

Yeah, i agree that my network place is very unreliable. I have tried your
suggestion before and that's why it made me want to assign static ip. I did
try entering "\\comp1" and attempt to access that comp1. But it gave an error
message that such as:

"\\comp1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

But when i type in the ip address of that comp1 on another computer, it
works. I am sure both computers are on the network with internet access. Any
good suggestions?

Two suggestions to try on each computer:

A. Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click WINS.
8. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

B. The registry entry that allows browsing the computer could have the
wrong value. Run the registry editor (Start | Run | regedit) and open
this key:

HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA

Set the value RestrictAnonymous to 0. Reboot and try accessing the
computer again.

Hi Steve,

That totally solved my problem! Thank you so much! I have been trying for so
long that it is starting to get on my nerves. The only thing different was to
"Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button" step.

Previously, my network place was good and the next i had that error i
mentioned earlier. Why did that happen? Just being curious ...

Hi Steve,

I am sad to say that it is not working again. I restarted my computer and i
re-did the steps you mentioned but still not working. *sigh*

It can take 15 minutes or more after a computer starts before browsing
through My Network Places works at all. Even then, as I've said
before, I find it so unreliable that I don't use it. Accessing the
other computer using "Start > Run > \\computer" should work
immediately.

Hi Steve,

I did try using Start> Run> \\computername1 and it still does not work. But
only when i used the ip address of that computer 1 then i could access the
files there. Do you know what could have caused that?

That's a NetBIOS name resolution problem. Here are some things to
check on each computer:

1. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.

2. Run "services.msc" and make sure that these services are started
and are set for automatic startup:

Computer Browser
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Workstation

3. Run "eventvwr.msc" and look for relevant error messages. For more

I have done as told and i saw a few errors concerning DHCP and not some of

Good find, but I'm afraid that it doesn't explain the problem. If you
computer loses its IP address and can't renew it, nothing would will
work on the network. You won't be able to access the computer by IP
address or by name.

I'm running out of ideas for how to fix it. :-(

Hi Steve,

Weird isn't it? I can assign the computer by ip address but can't access it
by its name. Haha ... Maybe, i will double check again just to make sure. My
problem is one big weird case i must say!

Hope you think of something soon ...
