problem installing, install window is grey and I can't see anything...

It goes through the startup steps fine:
configuring windows installer
preparing to install
microsoft antispyware window is grey, can't see anything
have to click x to cancel

Windows XP Professional, SP2
Dell Optiplex G280
256MB

I recently installed it on an identical setup with no
problems at all. Any ideas?
