problem installing framework .NET

I have tried to install the visual framework.NET from the
following sources: Visual Studio .NET trial DVD, the
redistributable version from microsoft.com and the
version from windows update. The instalation progress bar
fills up but does not complete and the framework does not
install eventhough through windows task manager the
install shield is still responding. Have left my machine
run for 5 hours but still no install. Tried on another
slower machine runing XP and installed in 5 mins no
problem!

Running: Windows XP Pro, 256mb RAM, Pentium 4
 
.NET framework 1.1 is available thru windows update.Leaving a computer
running for 5 hrs hopeing for the install to "suddenly" start working isnt
very smart,if it doesnt keep progresing after 3-5 mins, terminate...
