Problem installing AntiVirus software

Hi,

I already tried the Antivirus news group, but no help there, so hoping
someone here can help. We just recently upgraded our AV server from
Symantec Corporated Edition AntiVirus 8.01 to 9.02. I uninstalled the AV
from each computer and installed the newer version from the AV Server client
installer. Out of 47 computers at this location, one computer does not want
to install it.

The program goes through its motion for installing. I get the setup screen,
choose my options, click to install and once its done, click finish, but
nothing was installed. I uninstalled the AV the same way I did on the other
46 computers, yet this one does not want to install it. I copied the
install folder to that comp, tried the install again, still goes through the
motions but does not install the program.

I have done Virus checks using two online sites, I have done spyware checks,
I have tried a different account to install it from, and tried it in both
Safe mode and standard mode. I went through the event log and only events
associated with the install are
MRxSmb Event ID 3019
Event ID 11708

I have looked them both up, but haven`t found anything useful. I have also
checked Symantec`s website and as usual, nothing useful there. It is just
annoying that one computer does not want this program to install. I even
disable as many services before boot up and tried, but just does not
install.

I have gone through the registry removing anything that is associated with
Symantec and still no luck. Hope someone may have a solution for me. Thank
you.

Event ID 11708
This event ID can be generated for a number of different reasons, the ones
that is encountered most are listed below:
1) Corrupt user profile
2) Improper permissions to component Services (Windows XP). Go to start run
and type in "dcomcnfg" expand Component Services > Computer and go to
properties on "My Computer" and modify permissions on "default COM Security"
as needed

I am not sure about the next one,but take a look.

Event ID 3019
As per Microsoft: "This issue can occur because Exchange Server 5.5 Service
Pack 3 makes virus-scanning APIs available to speed up attachment scanning.
Because of this, certain replication problems can occur if the replication
messages contain attachments".

First, you didn't need to uninstall, you could have just pushed the
installs to the machines.

Second, I would suggest that you have a corrupted profile. You might be
able to disjoin the domain on that computer and then rejoin it and then it
might work just fine.

Hi Leythos,

Unfortunately, we are still not on a Domain, but using workgroups. I know,
what the Heck are we still using workgroups. I have been pushing to get
Domain, but hasn`t come yet. So unfortunately, I have to manually install
it on each computer, someday I will have my domain if they ever buy me my
Domain Controllers.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your response. You gave me more to work with then the responses
I got in the AntiVirus newsgroup. I will check these out on the user`s
computer and hope something works. I will report back with my results.

If you are doing a manual roll-out in a non-domain setup, then logon as
Administrator and do the install, if not Administrator, then create a new
local account with Admin rights, and then try that account.

Hi Leythos

When I did this, I was logged in as the administrator. I also logged in on
a secondary account that has admin rights as well and still no go. The
secondary account was never used on this computer before, so a new profile
was created. I also tried it under the user`s account by using the open as
option. It will just not install on this one computer. With 3 failures,
its not a corrupted profile.

Have you run a CHKDSK /F on the problem machine's hard drive? I've seen
unused security descriptors cause permissions errors that effected
installing/running software.

Hi Steve,

Running CHKDSK /F didn`t help either. I can install other programs with no
problem, just not the AV. Its strange.

Some malware or viruses can prevent the installation of a/v. Have you
take any measures to make the machine is clean using Ad-Aware, Spybot
S&D, Stinger, Sysclean, etc.?

Hi Steve,

The system is clean of any Spyware. I have run Spybot, Ad-aware, also have
Spywareblaster installed. I have run two online AV scans, one from Pandasoft
and the other from Trend Micro. I have also ran CWShreddar as well. I
unistalled Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.1 to install Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0.2. The computer is scanned daily with
Spybot and they are up to date.

At this point it's starting to look like a Symantec problem, like
possibly the older version didn't quite uninstall completely or
something. Have you contacted them about it? I've read there have been
problems with other Symantec a/v products not uninstalling nicely and
that special uninstallers were available from Symantec for those problems.
