Problem installing 6.5 drivers

I have a Sapphire X800gto2 video card running the 6.1 cat video drivers. I
tried to install the 6.5 drivers today first over top of the old drivers and
then using ATI's tool to uninstall the 6.1 drivers. However, both times
trying to install the 6.5 drivers a window popped up that said, "severe" and
something like "video display not available" and then went on with the
installation but nothing was installed.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Get the CAT driver removal tool from ATI's website and then try the driver
install again.

Well he did, didn't he? The other thing he could try is a manual driver
update through device manager to bypass the installer. I've done that
one before. He could also try re-installing the 6.1s to at least get
back to his starting point, or a system restore (or other restore)
because naturally he took a backup before making the change... ahem!

After using the ATI tool to uninstall the drivers I rebooted to a vga
desktop. I was running in 1600 x 1200 and of course all icons an windows
were now gigantic. I then installed the 6.5 drivers which failed to install
with the severe error. After another reboot, I somehow had return to the 6.1
drivers and 1024 x 768 resolution. Don't know how to explain that. One other
thing the ATI drivers don't identify my video card properly and Sapphire's
website doesn't seem to admit to having manufactured it.

Thanks

Because you have tried to install the 6.5 ATI drivers, the files for
these should be sitting in c:\ati\support..... something or other
(sorry, I run Omegas at the moment and I can't remember!). Anyway,
they'll be there. So what you could do is open Device Manager (one
place to find it is in Computer Management under Administrative tools),
right click on the primary display and select "update driver". Use the
"have disk" option to browse to the 6.5 files in \support\.. (etc)...
Then do the same for the secondary display. I'll be surprised if that
doesn't work, regardless of your problems with the installer. As I say
this, I am wondering how you'll install the CCC, as I am used to doing
this with the "old" Control Panel as a separate installation pack.
Still, one thing at a time.

The other thing that occurs to me is that you'd need to be logged on as
an administrator to run the installer, or indeed to manually update the
drivers. Are you?

If all else fails, we can probably talk you thru getting back to 6.1
drivers for the time being.

Lastly, the severe error (anyone, jump in here!) couldn't perhaps be CCC
failing to install due to no .NET framework???

Lastly still (!), try the ATI knowledge base, or Googling the exact
"severe error" message.

Did you just go to add and remove programs and uninstall the drivers?

Yes, I am logged on as computer administrator and I have net framework 2.0
installed and yes I have tried to install the drivers manually, however
windows xp tells me it cannot find a better driver than the one I have,
believe it or not! I do have ccc installed. I do have the 6.14 catalyst
drivers installed.

Now, the severe error I mentioned is actually "zero display service". I have
tried ATI's knowledge base and come up with nothing. Googling shows that
this error is common, yet no one has an explanation for it or a solution.
Some people have said a weak power supply is the cause, yet I have no
problem with my power supply now with 6.14 drivers and running games like
Oblivion and Hitman: Blood Money. One person said that switching from a TFT
display to a CRT solved the problem but I have a CRT monitor.

With this error being common someone from ATI needs to step up and identify
what this error means and present a solution for it. Thanks!
