problem inserting .mpg file into pwpt

I have 2 .mpg files (size: 9.8MB and 4.8MB) which I would
like to insert(using the method of drag and drop) into my
powerpoint presentation. However, when I attempt to drag
it into my presentation, I get this error
prompt "MMSYSTEM264 There is not enough memory available
for this task. Quit one or more programs, then try again."

I tried to insert the .mpg files via 'Insert movie from
file'. I get an error prompt "Powerpoint couldn't insert a
movie from the selected file. Either the file is non-
standard, or Quicktime is not installed properly."

These 2 .mpg files used to be .avi files which I had
problem opening with Windows Media Player. I was advised
to change the file extension to .mpg. Now I have no
problem opening the files with Windows Media Player.

I do not have Quicktime installed on my pc.

Fyi, the current size of the pwpt presentation is about
2MB.

If the movies were .avi's it won't be enough to change the
file extension to mpg. They are completely different
animals. You'll have to convert them to mpeg's. A Google
search for avi to mpeg converter will turn up lots of
choices. As an added note, I've found mpeg1 to be the
most reliable in PowerPoint. Good luck.

Hi Tom,

thanks for your suggestion. I've d/l a converter and
attempted to convert the avi file into mpeg1 file.
However, the converter was unable to convert the avi file
into mpeg1. mpeg1 and mpeg2 files should have sudio and
video stream but the avi file i have does not have audio
stream.

any other solutions?

appreciate lots.

An MPEG file *can* have an audio and a video stream but it doesn't need to.

Have you got Real Player or Quicktime installed on your computer? It sounds
like something has hijacked your multimedia settings (particularly as you've
had so much trouble trying to play this file in various Media Players).

The renaming-the-file-extension trick can work but it relies on your machine
being happy with MPEG1 clips in PowerPoint.

Try this as a start:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/powerpoint/ppt2000/mmedia/default.asp
even if you're not using PowerPoint 2000.
