Problem importing .pst file

H

Heather Coburn

Hi there,

I am trying to import .pst files from a back up made on my old
computer, burned to cd (to place on the new machine).
This is what happens:
File|Import and Export|Import from another file or program|
Then I hit browse and choose the file from the cd drive, and it tells
me that the file isn't accessible to me. Access is denied, you do not
have permission, blah blah blah.
I tried copying the file to the desktop and importing it from there,
which also denies me access.
I also get that message when I try just opening it instead of
importing it.

Can anyone help? Pretty please?

Forget the Import/Export. Try this instead:

Create a new folder in Windows named "OLDATA"
Copy your old PST to that folder. Then right-click on the icon, select properties and clear the "read-only" attribute.
Open Outlook and click File > Open > Outlook Data File and navigate to your old PST. You should see the folder tree when you click View|Folder List (OL 2002 or earlier).

Once you open the folder set you can either set it as your default delivery location and get rid of the empty one Outlook created on setup or select all the messages in each folder and move them to the new folder set.
