Problem: GP Software Installation with DHCP

P

Phil

I'm running W2K Server, with W2K clients.

Under Computer Configuration\Software Settings, in the group policy for a
computer object, I have a couple of software installations set up.

These installed fine on the PC's that have fixed IP Addresses which are set
manually, however, on the PC's that use DHCP they don't install. It almost
seems like the network connection isn't being made before the PC would
normally try to install any required software.

Has anyone come across this or now of a solution?

I can't believe that you can't set up software installations in this way
when using DHCP

Thanks

Phil

No. I'm using GP based sofware installations with DHCP enabled and it works
fine.

Are you sure the group policy is being applied to the PC's on DHCP? Try
GPResult from a command line and see which policies are being applied.
It could be that your DHCP server has been configured incorrectly and is
assigning the wrong DNS server, which would result in what you are seeing.

Let me know what you find and I'll see what I can dig up.

The group policy is being applied - shows that it is using scripts etc from
the appropriate GP.

And I know the pc's have the rights to the GP, if I manually set up the same
pc with a fixed IP address it works fine.

If GPEdit is showing that the appropriate GP is being applied, the only thing
I can think of is that you have an IPSec policy somewhere that is only
allowing file sharing connections from the fixed IP address ranges you have
set up, and is not allowing access to shares from the IP address range being
allocated by DHCP.

Its not that, have check the IPSec out and anyway, have tried setting
manually the IP address to the same one issued by DHCP.

Am really stuck on this one

Apart from the IP address (obviously) is everything else that the DHCP server
assigns the same as what you are manually configuring?
Make sure that both DNS and WINS settings are identical.

If that all checks out, have a look in the system event log on the client
PC's and see if you are getting any errors being logged there.

Andy.
