Hi I keep getting this message about an error

If I try to ping (to check my tcpip stack etc )
I can ping 127.0.0.1 (fine)
but if I try and ping any of the bigpond ip's I get an error message
saying unable to connect,
I rang BigPond support and tried turning moden off and on, adding a
domain name suffix (vic.bigpond.net.au) etc.
I also was unable to telnet update-server as requested by support,
all I got was a no connect message.
I have run "repair " on the network icon, in ipconfig I have released,
renewed etc till I am blue in the face.

I had not installed any new programs just before this crisis.

I have virus scanned the whole drive as I had been told (not by BP)
that it may be the win mytob virus, no that was all clean, I ran
spybot and there was only the the "alexia " one there.

I have been to the Doug Knox website and downloaded the winsock fix
for xp, still no luck.
I ran the sfc /scannow to check for corrupted files and after it went
through its hoops I was still getting this error.
Finally I reloaded XP (pro) to a 50mb partition that was spare and
this works correctly.
I really want to repair my main drive c: installation as I have so
many programs that have been installed there and I do not want to
waste time reinstalling again.

I would really appreciate some help re this.

Does crossposting really get you more responses? Or FLAMES?

127.0.0.1 is YOUR machine, not the ISP.
I have an application that uses Apache, and it looks at that IP on MY
machine for the database.
If the winsock fix doesn't work; I have found that sometimes uninstalling
the NIC and reinstalling it will fix the problem.

I have found that by cross posting I get more gurus who see the
message and offer a helpful reply such as yours.
I do not know what has happened to my normal posting area (Bigpond
broadband but I has gone very quiet, it used to be a very busy/active
group, maybe they have all QSY'd (Moved) to some obscure anonymous
group. In the past it used to very good and some very clever &
Knowledgible (and good spellers) used to frequent those groups.

I know the 127.0.0.1 is my p/c, but if I can ping that address doesn't
it then mean that the TCP/IP part is working, I have had several
helpful replies (on broadband.bigpond groups) and have found the hosts
file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and added some lines as
recommended but unfortunately that made little difference to my
connecting to the web. I have as, I may have said, made a new
installation on a spare partition and I can now logon, doing a bit of
research I am not sure what is different but at least I can logon!
