problem creating new folders

Every time I attempt to create a new folder on Windows XP
Home Edition desktop, I get a freeze. I usually use the
right-click menu to create and rename folders, but this
problem has also occurred when I use the file menu or the
little menu bar on the left. Is this a known problem?
