problem adding data file

Guest

I just installed Outlook 2003. When I try to open it, it gives me the
following error and closes:

"Unable to open your default e-mail folders. Outlook could not start because
a data file to send and receive mail could not be found. To add a data file,
such as a personal folder file, double-click the Mail icon in Wondows Control
Panel."

When I try to add such a data file, it doesn't give me the option to select
the "types of storage" - thus I cannt add a new data file. Is there anyone
out there that could possibly help me? I am trying to have a working Outlook
program so that I might back up a malfunctioning iPhone that needs to be
replaced - I don't want to lose over 400 contacts and my calendar info..

Please help...

Try creating a new mail profile instead (also from Control Panel | Mail),
then tell Outlook to start with that profile. See if that helps.

When I try creating a new mail profile (Control Panel/Mail) it gives me the
error "There was an error locating one of the items needed to complete this
operation. It might have been deleted."

Any other tips?

Thank you for your help...

Do you get the same error if you open Outlook in safe mode? Go to Start |
Run and type:

outlook.exe /safe

Unfortunately, it gives me the same exact error messages. It also won't allow
me to add a new profile on startup...

Thanks for your ideas - very much....

Next suggestion: Run Detect and Repair from the Help menu of any installed
Office product (e.g. you can use Word if you can't get into Outlook). You'll
need to have your Office installation CD handy.

Jocelyn,

I am having the same problem. I ran detect and repair from Word with no
luck. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook. Any other
suggestions?

Have you tried running the Inbox Repair Tool against the .PST file you were
using? Look for and run a file called Scanpst.exe, and make sure you allow
the program to make a backup copy of your .PST file before it makes any
changes to it.
