Problem Accessing Shared Folder On Win 98 Box From Win XP Machine

I'm an IT technician at a centre for the disabled where most of our machines
are Win 98SE. We run a simple peer-to-peer network and one of the Win 98SE
machines acts as our file server (it has a shared folder on it). I've just
introduced a Win XP Pro SP2 machine on to this network with simple file
sharing enabled. It can view the files in the share but if you try to save
anything to the share it generates a "Folder isn't accessible" message. I've
tried taking off simple file sharing but still get the error message.

Has anyone met this problem before?

(We would like to use all Win XP Pro machines but we just don't have the
funds to do so at the moment.)

Have you check the following:
On the XP Pro SP2:
1. Check the firewall settings, make sure under the Exceptions tab that File & printing sharing is enabled.
2. If there is a third party firewall program such as Zone Alarm, you will need to allow file & printing sharing in that program.

On the W98SE machine:
1. Right-click the shared folder> Properties> Sharing tab> Make sure it is set to be shared, and that FULL access is selected.
2. If there is a third party firewall program such as Zone Alarm on this PC, you will need to allow file & printing sharing in that program. You may need to add the XP Pro SP2 PC, in the program's Trusted Zones.

Thanks for this - I'd already done everything except the firewall exceptions
which I've now set but I still have the problem.

The other thing that I can suggest is to check the following.
On the W98SE PC:
1. Right click the "Shared" folder> Properties> Make sure that for some reason the folder's properties, has not been changed to "Read Only".
2. Make sure that the "name" of the "Shared" folder does not contain more than 12 characters in it. Also that there are no "Spaces" in the name. Now this will cause you to have to remap this folder with the other PC's on the network.
3. If all else fails, you might consider creating a new "SHARED" folder, as in step#2, on the W98SE PC. Such as:

C:\SHARED2 or X:\SHARED2 Where "X" is another drive on the PC.

Move a file into the folder and see if the XP SP2 PC can see the file, and write to the folder. You may want to test from the other PC's on the network, and see if this fix, works for them, too. If it works, you may want to move all the files from the Old "SHARED" folder, to the new "SHARED2" folder. Then remap the other PC's in the network to the new "SHARED2" folder.

Thanks for this RRR. The problem was spaces in the share name (and probably
also the length of the share name). Problem resolved.

If you have, or will in the future install a printer on the network. You will need to make sure that the Printer's share name over the network, also follows the same 12 character & no space rule.
