Problem accessing root of network share through shortcut

Hi all!

A client of mine has a strange problem. It's impossible to access
the "root" of a shared folder through a shortcut.

Server name: "Grbintradb2"
Folder is shared as: "Arkiv"

It's impossible to access the "root" of the shared folder through a
shortcut. When double-clicking the shortcut, Windows XP says
that the target has been changed or moved and asks if I want to
delete the shortcut.

If I create a shortcut to a SUBFOLDER in the shared directory,
(like \\Grbintradb2\Arkiv\Reports) it works all right. Then I can
click the "Up" button to access the "root" level of the network
share.

I also tried to create shortcuts to other network shares, and had
the same problem whenever I tried to use a shortcut to go to the
root of a network share.

This only happens on one single machine in a a large network.
My client says that it worked all right a week ago. The problems
started yesterday for no obvious reason.

I'm puzzled. Any ideas?

Have you looked at the permissions on both the Share (e.g.
sharing permissions) and the NTFS security settings?

No, I haven't. And I'm not at the client right now, so I can't check
them out now. But the strange thing is that he hasn't any problems
working with the files in the network share once he gets there, it's
just that it doesn't work to use a shortcut to go to the shared folder.

I don't know much about Windows XP security , but in my mind,
security settings shouldn't cause this kind of problem.
