Probably a simple mistake

I had a little home network with a laptop and a pc, both
running w2k. The laptop died, and now i have a new one
with XP, and I cant get IP connectivity between the two.
Is there something special in XP that i need to watch out
for?
I have read myself stupid and tried everything to
troubleshoot.
No firewall, cross cable of course. IP config is ok, I
have added and removed it 50 times.
Please help.
