Pro SP2, unable to change background.. wtf?!

C

colin.

I know, I know this sounds like a mega trivial and pointless question, but
it is driving me up the bloody wall.

I am using XP Pro with SP2. Pretty standard. I'm the only user and,
naturally, I have full admin rights. The thing is, it's stopped letting me
change the desktop background.

No error messages. No nothing. It just doesn't work. I do it like this:

Display properties > desktop > browse {search for file} hit "open" and there
it ends. Whereas normally it shows a preview of the image and then you can
stretch/centre it, there is _nothing_.

I can use any of the standard crappy Windows ones. I cannot use any of my
choice. Not even if I copy the photo to c:/windows/web/wallpaper. It
doesn't even appear in the list alongside the standard ones.

I have absolutely no idea what is going on. It's virus- and spyware-free.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Colin
