printing problems through remote desktop

I work in 2 separate physical locations. At one location
there is the host server running Windows 2000 Server. At
the other location there is the client running Windows XP
Professional and directly connected via USB cable to a
Lexmark X6150 multipurpose printer. The printer is
installed as a local printer.

My problem is this: The printer on the local client will
not work when trying to print from the remote desktop. It
DOES work when printing locally.

The USB port is recognized by the host server when I log
into a Remote Desktop session.

In the Remote Desktop Connection window/local
resources/local devices I have checked Printers.

The printer drivers have been installed manually using
the installation CD on both the server and the client.

When I log in, the Lexmark appears as an installed
printer located on port USB001. However, when I try to
print a test page, I get an immediate warning message
from the Windows 2000 server telling me the test page has
failed.

HELP....

Sitting at the client machine, not yet connected to the host via RDP, what
port is the printer connected to? (usually there's a ports tab in
properties of the printer.)

Is it really USB001, or is it something else?

I've a USB001 connected printer which redirects and prints just fine, but it
isn't a multifunction device, and it is an HP, rather than a Lexmark.

On the client PC, for your network connection, make sure that both 1
Client for Microsoft Networks and 2) File & Printer Sharing ar
installed AND enabled (i.e. checked). Then reconnect using Remot
Desktop (with the local printer checkbox checked) and see if your loca
printer shows up in the list of printers when you try to prin
something.

This information came from Microsoft Support and worked for me, as
was having the same problem you are
