Printing Issue

Hi i'm currently trying to add an HP Lasjet 1000 to a
compaq laptop through a standard USB port, however within
the printer properties there is no local ports to choose
from it just displays a LAN port!!!

I havc looked this up in microsoft KB article 255507, this
article asks to locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\PRINT\M
ONITORS\LOCAL PORT

However when i go to locate this key the local port folder
is not available

Going from memory here but the last time I saw this problem was the user
neglected to install the software BEFORE they plugged the printer into
the USB. For this install to work the USB drivers AND the printer
drivers need to be installed before the printer is ever connected. To
straignten it out the printer software needs to be uninstalled with the
HP uninstaller the printer unconnected and then follow the installation
instructions to the letter. If still having issues contact HP tech
support.
