Printing from Word 2007 - printer error

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the correct group, but since it's a problem
affecting a Word document, I thought I'd start here.

I have a user who is trying to print a document to a printer that
automatically goes to paper tray 2, if paper tray 1 is empty, or runs out of
paper while printing. The problem is this:

When she tries to print this particular document (a document saved as
97-2003), if there is not enough paper in tray 1, it returns an error,
instead of automatically going to tray 2.

We have tested other multiple page documents and have had no problems. I
have tried printing documents saved as "97-2003" and "2007" without errors.

I've looked at the Word options, but nothing stands out. I've also checked
the printer settings, and these appear normal. None of the defaults had been
changed. Before moving to Vista and Office 2007, she did not have any
problems printing this document.

Since other documents print fine - using both paper trays - it appears that
something is embedded in this document, but I'm just not sure where to look.

Any suggestions from anyone? Should I post any additional information?

Have you queried the printer manufacturer? Is the printer driver current?

Hi Mary,

Yes, we've had the printer company here and my Service guys looking at it,
and everything is current.

It's weird that it's only this file (I guess I should say "so far").

My first thought if it happens on a single document is that there is a macro
intercepting the Print command. What is the exact error you encounter?

Hi Beth, Thanks for the response. There are no macros attached to the file,
and we do not get an onscreen error message. Once sent to the printer, the
file will print as many pages as are in tray 1, and then the red error light
on the copier/printer turns on - instead of going to tray 2 to finish the
print job.

I know this really sounds like it must be a printer problem, but since it is
only happening to this one file, I keep going back to the cause being the
file itself. Also, since it printed fine when using Office 2003 and XP
operating system, I'm wondering if there is a Vista compatibility problem -
but, again, why only this file??

Any more thoughts, or addtional information needed? I really appreciate any
suggestions. Thanks.

I can't speak confidently about Word 2007, but I would assume the setup is
similar to previous versions: on the Paper tab of Page Setup for the
document, make sure that the paper source for all pages is set to "Default
tray (AutoSelect)" or the like rather than a specific tray.

Did you check Page Setup on the Paper tab and make sure something isn't set
there? If you want it to default to the available tray then I believe both
First Page and Other Pages need to be set to the Default Tray.
