Printing from Windows XP Home Ed

I have a HP PhotoSmart P1000 printer that my computer says
is operating properly. But I cannot print what is on the
screen. I get symbols, letters and numbers that are not
on the screen. On the screen to set up a printer, my
printer is not listed. I have tried downloading newer
drivers for my printer, but still no luck. Please help! I
have an hp scanjet 3300C I would like to use also.
