Printer spooler crashing regularly

I have a printer server on 2000 advanced server running 30 queues.
Everything was running fine for quite sometime until one day my
spooler crashed and would not restart. Event logging showed Event ID
7031. Article 820550 explained the exact problem and recommended a
hotfix. I was at SP2 at the time so immediately upgraded to SP4.
That seemed to fix the problem for awhile but I am once again getting
spooler crashes only this time with Event ID 2510 and error codes
1722, 1726, and 1727. I cannot find any reference for this event and
error. I always have a job queued to at least one printer and I have
found that manually deleting the spool files out of my queue directory
will allow me to restart the spooler. Has anyone seen this behavior
or have any links to fixes? Searches on the web and MS support is not
turning up anything.

Thanks,

Hal

What printer drivers are you using? Problematic print drivers can cause
spooler to crash (cause spoolsvc to leak memory and then crash). Make sure
your printer drivers are up-to-date.

Thanks for the reply. The only concern I have with this is that it
doesn't seem to be related to a particular printer. I have had
several crashes and it seems to be different printers with spooled
files each time. I will try some updates for suspected culprits as
you suggest.

So another question if I may: I can install new drivers in the
advance properties tab on the server, and on the sharing tab under
"additional drivers" it says that users can download them
automatically when they connect. Is this true? Does the server auto
download the driver update to the client when they submit a print job,
or will they need to log off/on to reshare the printer. Or will I
need to update drivers on individual clients?

Thanks for the help
