Printer sharing

I have a printer connected to a Windows 2000 machine that is connected to a
wireless router. From a Windows XP wireless client I want to access the
printer.

The printer is an HP 3150 all-in-one and I have both Win2K and XP drivers
for it. On the Win2K computer the printer is 'shared'.

What's the easy way to do this?

Have you tried running the Add Printer Wizard and connecting to the printer
as a networked printer? If so, what happened?

Yes, I tried that. The printer on the Win2K computer is shared as "HP". If
I try to browse for the printer, it is not found. The workgroup name is
shown, but no computer or printer is shown. If I supply the printer name it
is not found. If I supply the Win2K computer name and printer name it is
not found (\\rocket\hp and \\192.168.0.3\hp).

I also tried to connect as if the printer is locally connected by adding a
port that is served by the other computer. I don't really know how to do
that and was unsuccessful with that also.

I just retried browsing for "\\192.168.0.3\hp" and got a slightly different
result than I had previously described. I got a sign on window from
'rocket' and I entered the administrator user id and password. It then gave
me the following message:
"Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed."

If you have the Windows XP firewall on either computer (or both computers),
disable it; if you have a third-party firewall on either computer (or both
computers), uninstall it. See if you can browse the network and find
printers then.

Check your HP 3150 documentation carefully. I have not had any success with
sharing HP all-in-one printers over a LAN connection. The OfficeJet G85
wants a JetDirect print sharer, which costs a pretty penny. An OfficeJet
5510 (I think; it is at a friend's house) won't allow shared access via the
USB line to a D-Link DI-704UP router, which has a USB printer port.

Thanks for your help, I'm printing now! I disabled the XP firewall and
still the Add Printer Wizard printer browser didn't show the printer, but
when I used the IP address of the Win2K PC with the printer name
(\\192.168.0.3\hp) it told me I was installing a printer that would put a
driver on my PC. I said "OK" and it installed, but initially whenever I
printed to that printer I got a dialog box that asked for a filename. I
deleted and reinstalled several times and I don't really know what I did
differently, but now it works.

It wasn't as easy as I'd hoped and I'm not completely sure how I did it, but
it's now working. There's so much I don't know -- like how and when one PC
picks up the computer name of another PC on my little network and why
there's no easy way to browse my network and actually 'see' all the
computers on it. Anyway, it's working now and I'm happy.

Excellent news, and thanks for letting us know the solution.
