Printer sharing in Firewall

J

XP Home SP3

I have Printer and File sahring allowed in Firewall. I keep unchecking the
box but, at least, each time I reboot it is checked again. I cannot
understand what is forcing it to override my decision.

I have done all sorts of scans with virus and othe rporgrammes and as far
as I can tell I have a clean computer.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Lots of missing information in your post. What antivirus/security software
do you have installed? Quite a few of them have protective features that
disallow changes to the registry.

Another thing you left out is what programs you used to scan for malware and
your method. Please take a look at the information at this link to see if
you were that thorough:

Hello Malke

I have Avast as my resident AV and have also Windows Defender and Spyware
Blaster active. I run regular (at least weekly) scans with SpyBot, AdAware,
Kaspersky and HouseCall and I am pretty certain everything is clean.

Last week, I used remote Desktop for the first time to access my University
website, and also used VPN. Maybe that has created something that forces
File&Printer sharing.

I have disabled WMP network sharing (I?m translating from foreign language
Windows) in Msconfig/Services and wonder if I can/should disble also
'Windows Firewall/Sharing ccess to the Internet (ICS).

In the Firewall/Advanced tab there are 3 connections. I unchecked 2 which
includes the one, I think, used for the Remote Access.

In fact, I have just looked at the Firewall and the File&Printer sharing is
checked again, even thoiugh I did not restart the computer. Something is
forcing it on and I would like to know what. Could it be for instance the
fact that earlier on I downloaded some video from UTube?

Thanks for your help.

Best~

I doubt that YouTube has anything to do with it, but do suspect a service to
allow the VPN and/or RDC is running. Check there.

Thank you Malke

I found the culprit. I had Printer Sharing set up because earlier the
computer was connected through a router in Home office set up. All's well
now.

Thanks
