Printer problems

My wife has a Lexmark X73 printer/scanner. Every now and
then, XP will advise that the X73 printer is
unrecognizable and will not print to it. We usually have
to disconnet the USB cable, delete and reinstall the
printer. Well this time in the printers folder, the X73
shows up as "deleting" but never deletes and will not
reinstall because system does not see it. How can I get
rid of this "deleting" icon so that XP will reinstall the
printer. Thanks for any assist.

.
Go to ControlPanel/Add or Remove Programs and uninstall
everything listed pertaining to the printer/scanner.
Also check ControlPanel/Printer and other hardware and
see if the printer/scanner is no longer listed. Unplug
the USB cable and turn PC Off. Now reboot PC WITHOUT it
plugged in. After it boots, plug the USB printer cable
back in and XP's Plug&Play feature should state that new
hardware was found and ask you if you want to install
it. Answer "yes" and insert installation CD and install
it. That should solve future issues also.
